CME Data Center Installs Backup Cooling After Outage Disrupts Derivatives Markets
A critical cooling system failure at CyrusOne's CHI1 data center in Aurora, Illinois—a key infrastructure hub for CME Group's global derivatives exchanges—sparked market concerns after temperatures exceeded 100°F (38°C) during Thursday's outage. The facility, which supports CME's Chicago Mercantile Exchange, CBOT, NYMEX, and COMEX platforms, has since added redundant cooling systems to prevent future disruptions.
CyrusOne, now owned by KKR & Co. and Global Infrastructure Partners, assured clients of restored stability following the November 27 incident. The event highlighted systemic vulnerabilities in financial infrastructure as CME's disaster recovery protocols were activated. No cryptocurrency derivatives were directly impacted, though the outage underscored the fragility of centralized trading venues.
